  Creative Critical Reflection

 After having received peer reviews, I compiled a list of tasks to do to refine my magazine. The following is the list:  1. Create a timeline for the feature article to make it more elaborate, seismic map from wikicommons 2. Use photoshop to illustrate a tsunami behind the pharos tower. 3. Include more articles to fill up content page. 4. Remove highlights on contents page for simplicity. 5. Place text atop Cover photo.

  The reviews I received showed what I did well and where I can improve. I received reviews from six people.  The first person said that our magazine was barren and that there should be more elaborate in its text and photographs. My reason for this was that we wanted the design of our magazine to be simplistic in nature. One of his suggestions that I will consider implementing is the creation of a timeline for my feature articles as well as those of my partner.  The second person described our pictures used as underwhelming. My reasoning for the use of these pictures was because we encountered the problem of creating original content because the events take place in foreign countries. To address the issue of citing photographers, we used public domain images.   Over the past weekend, my partner has been working on a new magazine cover to make our magazine look more simplistic.  The icon in the upper right corner is cuneiform script for the Babylonian deity of wisdom , Nabu .  We agreed to use this icon as many college  educated individuals (our target audience) are familiar with certain cultural features of Babylon  such as the hanging gardens and the tower of Babel, few are familiar with the  Babylonian   panthe on .  Through the use of  this icon, we  achieve  some level of obscurity while leaving some extent of familiarity with the subject for the  college educated.  

    Because of my inability to get into contact with academic scholars, I chose to research documents pertaining to the accountings of the subject of my feature article.  The literature that I found, which contains  a number of  other citations which I will research, is from the 10th Canadian conference on earthquake engineering.  These  citations include accountings from  geologists as well as one historian who experienced the event himself, that historian being Ammianus Marcellinus. after review of this literature, I have determined that in my feature article, I will use  this study as well as the cited  sources as reference for my article.   

    My partner has informed me that he is working on a simpler design for our magazine. his intention is to make it more minimalistic to resemble a magazine such as  TIME , LIFE, or National Geographic.  As for me, I have fully negated the possibility of contacting professors for research into my project as I have ascertained that I am running tight on time regarding research development. to resolve this problem, I have found and downloaded a  paper  regarding the seismic activity during the tsunami of 365 AD .  The paper contains several sources which I can use for reference when creating my feature article.  I hope that I  can  set aside distractions  and begin working on and completing the full a portfolio within this week or the next, ideally before the deadline.  While this may seem excessive, I have cleared my schedule as much as I can so that I can get  this,  and other  projects  finis...

   Since I was unable to contact scholars over winter break  do two unrelated matters , I will use academic papers as my main source of information. While it may make my magazine seem less  like a magazine and more like an academic Journal, it is important to remember that the target audience of my magazine and that of my partners magazine is college educated individuals. As I  begin to draft out my feature article as well as finishing determining what I will have in the magazine, I will work to re acquaint myself with Adobe programs including Adobe photo shop, illustrator, in design, and premier pro.  Over this weekend,  I will work to  write on my feature article as well as  create  my final cover photo  likely being my own personal rendering of photoshop of a tsunami behind the Alexandrian pharos  in a wide or aerial shot.        With winter break beginning shortly, I will have more time to  assess and work on how I can develop my magazine. Despite my being unable to obtain credit for late blog posts,  I will do them regardless over the break so that Cambridge can see the posts when my portfolio is completed. With specifics to the magazine,  I will work on the development of my feature article by collecting research from correspondence with professors of history, archaeology, and geology. To make sure that I can discuss  the subject of my feature article with these professors, I will send emails to roughly 4 of them for each subject so that if one is not available, there may be another professor that is available to hold the discussion .         After some personal setbacks, including a surgery in which the effects of the localized anesthesia remained, I had fallen behind and had neglected some of my classes. With focus to this project, I figure that in order to get caught up and gain ground, I will have to retrace my steps to review my feedback for my portfolio concept, and better understanding the storyboard. On the subject of the storyboard, the anesthesia, as mentioned earlier, hindered me from focusing and hence I could not be punctual on that, so that is my top priority.        When going on a new venture in a subject fruitful with options, it can be difficult to determine what you want to do. In my case, being a magazine for my portfolio, I initially had trouble deciding whether I wanted to do a film sequence or a magazine. When I had decided that, it was up to the genre I was going to do. Naturally, I had chosen to go with what I enjoy, mainly a mix of history, war, and fiction based on those two. Because I had chosen history and war, I did not think, initially, that I had enough room for creativity, which I ended up finding that I did.     To Team or Not to Team  In My Portfolio project I had indecision as to whether I should work in a group or not. Sometimes in collaborative work that I participate in, I sometimes have the notion that I am not contributing enough to the group project. There is an explanation for this notion. Terry Pettijohn and Shujaat Ahmed (2010) of Coastal Carolina University states that this habit is called social loafing. They describe social loafing as “the likelihood of individuals contributing less when working on a task as part of a group than when working on a task alone... [it] generally increases with group size and decreases with task importance, potential for evaluation, uniqueness of individual contributions, and complexity of task.” The possibility of loafing in a group is why I had a preference to work independently.    After some reconsideration, I decided to work in a team rather than inde...

    This past week we  looked at  tutorials on Premier Pro and InDesign, two programs from Adobe Software.  Premier pro  is used for editing films and InDesign is used for creating magazine covers, book pages, etc. After having  examined the programs alongside what we plan on using them for, opening sequences and magazine covers respectively, I have de veloped the preference of going with the former  rather than the latter .  My reasoning for this is that  in terms of popularity, film has surpassed magazines. Film allows for more creativity in how I convey  a them e  and develop it’s understanding . With Premier Pro, the features used cater better to my personal needs  and caprices.    With films becoming more popular , I find that I can gain more consumers through a film than a magazine.
